Revitalizing History: All Saints Dallas by Cunningham Architects
The transformation of a dilapidated industrial structure near downtown into the new home for All Saints Church marks a remarkable architectural endeavor by Cunningham Architects. Originally erected as an auto dealership in the early twentieth century, the building had succumbed to neglect over the decades.
The overarching objective of the design endeavor was to uphold the integrity of the original structure and its core elements while accommodating the evolving needs of the church’s expanding congregation with contemporary amenities.
Preserving Heritage, Embracing Innovation
A pivotal aspect of the renovation involved preserving the essence of the original building while integrating modern functionalities. Cunningham Architects orchestrated the removal of several sections of exterior masonry walls to create two exterior entry courts—one facing the parking area and the other opening towards downtown. These entry points lead to a central interior lobby accessed through expansive sliding glass doors. When these doors slide open, the interior seamlessly merges with the exterior, fostering a spacious gathering area.
Seamlessly Blending Spaces
The redesigned entryway serves as a welcoming conduit, guiding worshippers towards the heart of the building—the Sanctuary. Defined by simplicity and luminosity, the Sanctuary boasts expansive glass windows encircling its periphery, accentuated by the exposed building structure. The remainder of the structure houses administrative offices and versatile gathering spaces, adaptable to the diverse needs of the congregation.
The restoration of the industrial relic into All Saints Dallas exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of tradition and innovation. Cunningham Architects’ meticulous approach not only revitalized a decaying edifice but also breathed new life into a sacred space, fostering community and spiritual nourishment for generations to come.
