Transforming Spaces: Refurbishment of an Apartment in Belo Horizonte

Located in downtown Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a 100m² apartment nestled within the Pilar Building underwent a remarkable renovation in 2023 under the creative direction of architect Jô Vasconcellos. Built in 1961, the residential building boasts various floorplans and includes a commercial area at ground level.

Adapting to Owner’s Needs

The primary objective of the renovation project was to tailor the apartment to meet the specific needs of its owner. Previously divided into small rooms, the spaces were integrated to create a more open and cohesive layout. Architect Jô Vasconcellos and the team uncovered the concrete structures hidden beneath layers of materials, simplifying the spaces by implementing a uniform flooring throughout.

Embracing Unique Design Elements

Unconventional materials and shapes were utilized to introduce a sense of novelty and fluidity into the space while preserving its natural charm. The renovation prioritized natural light and capitalized on the scenic views of the Municipal Park adjacent to the building. By incorporating these elements, the refurbished apartment encourages a relaxed and seamless living experience.

Enhancing Functionality and Aesthetics

The proposed floor plan reflects a strategic approach to optimizing space utilization and enhancing the apartment’s functionality. Uniting aesthetics with practicality, the renovation allows for effortless navigation within the apartment while elevating its visual appeal.

The Refurbishment of an Apartment in the Pilar Building by Jô Vasconcellos Architects is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design. By reimagining the existing space and incorporating innovative design elements, the project not only meets the owner’s needs but also enhances the overall living experience, creating a harmonious blend of style and functionality.
