Preserving Đạo Mẫu Heritage: A Tribute to Vietnamese Folk Art

In Vietnam, ARB Architects undertook a cultural architectural endeavor aimed at preserving the timeless traditions of Đạo Mẫu, a cherished belief system deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture. Situated in a tranquil village near Hanoi, the project unfolds within a lush 5,000-square-meter landscape adorned with a 50-year-old orchard and a quaint house that once provided solace for its owner’s weekend retreats.

Harmonizing Tradition with Contemporary Design

ARB Architects, in collaboration with the homeowner, embarked on a mission to retain the essence of the existing landscape while infusing modern functionalities. The project embraced the preservation of all existing elements, including trees, the old house, fence, and gate pillars. Yet, elements like gate wings were replaced, and potted bonsai trees found new homes with enthusiasts. The transformation involved repurposing the old house into an expansive exhibition space for Đạo Mẫu artifacts, with the mezzanine dismantled to accommodate larger exhibits.

Seamlessly Integrating New Elements

To minimize disruption to the existing trees, new functional blocks were strategically positioned around the old house. These blocks, housing accommodation areas, a gallery, and a kitchen, complemented the revamped exhibition space, seamlessly blending modern amenities with traditional architecture. The design aimed to frame the ancient orchard from the neighboring street, creating an architectural ensemble that harmonized with the local environment.

Revitalizing Tradition with Clay Tiles

Central to the project’s design ethos was the revival of traditional clay tiles collected from historic houses in nearby villages. Amidst the rapid urbanization reshaping rural landscapes, the project sought to preserve the architectural heritage symbolized by traditional tiled roofs. By repurposing these tiles, the project not only breathed new life into ancient materials but also honored the sacred ambiance of votive ceremonies and temple rituals deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture.

A Reverent Tribute to Cultural Legacy

Through the creation of the Đạo Mẫu museum, ARB Architects honored Vietnamese heritage by repurposing clay tiles from centuries-old houses. These tiles, once part of the architectural tapestry of rural Vietnam, now embark on a new journey, preserving the nation’s enduring beliefs and traditions. In crafting a space that seamlessly merges tradition with modernity, the project serves as a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of Vietnamese folk art and culture.
