Revitalizing Nature: Filsø Visitor’s Center

Situated near Henne on the Danish west coast, the Filsø Visitor’s Center stands as a testament to the restoration of one of Denmark’s largest lakes. Originally drained for agricultural purposes, the area was reclaimed in 2011 by Aage V. Jensen’s Nature Foundation with the aim of restoring it to its former natural glory.

The Context

Filsø is not just a visitor’s center; it’s a pivotal part of the “Places in the Landscape” campaign, spearheaded by Realdania and The Danish Nature Agency. This collaborative effort aimed to create a central hub for nature routes in the area and provide a recognizable starting point for visitors exploring Filsø.

The Design Solution

Designed by Schønherr, the visitor’s center comprises an access road, educational facilities, a landscape bridge, and a parking lot. The elliptical-shaped bridge serves as a focal point, anchoring the building while offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Filsø. Its design encourages visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area, providing seating edges for moments of contemplation.

Integration with Nature

The school building, nestled within the landscape, complements the visitor’s center’s curved structure. Vertical shutters mirror the nearby forest, blending the architecture seamlessly with its surroundings. Inside, visitors find a sheltered information area, toilets, a kitchen, and a classroom equipped with large windows and a fireplace. Direct access to the outdoor educational area enhances the learning experience, with the schoolyard doubling as an equipment storage space.

Success and Impact

Since its inauguration, the Filsø Visitor’s Center has seen remarkable success, welcoming over 100,000 visitors in its first year. This influx of visitors has not only benefited the municipality but has also contributed to the area’s nature restoration efforts. With the return of diverse bird species, fish, and aquatic plants, Filsø has transformed into a thriving ecosystem, marking a significant improvement from its monoculture past.

Conclusion

The Filsø Visitor’s Center stands as a beacon of environmental conservation and community engagement. Through thoughtful design and collaborative efforts, it serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of Filsø, inviting visitors to reconnect with nature and appreciate the beauty of Denmark’s landscape.
