Goppion’s Contribution to Louvre’s Islamic Art Galleries: A Marriage of Form and Function
Architectural Marvel Below the Pyramid: The Louvre’s Islamic Art Wing
In the heart of the Louvre museum, an architectural masterpiece unfolds beneath the iconic glass pyramid – the Louvre’s Islamic Art Galleries. Designed by the renowned architect Mario Bellini, this new wing is conceived as a hidden treasure chest, beckoning visitors to explore the rich tapestry of Islamic art. Situated two floors below the Cour Visconti, near the Seine, the construction involved excavating 12 meters into the ground, its crown covered by a floating glass veil.
Exhibition Symphony: Jean Nouvel’s Design Brilliance
Jean Nouvel takes the helm of the exhibition design, orchestrating a dark interior that serves as a captivating backdrop for the luminous treasures within. The interplay of light and shadow finds its perfect complement in Goppion’s display cases, strategically placed to accentuate the visual allure of the exhibited masterpieces.
Goppion Display Cases: A Fusion of Strength and Elegance
The choice of Goppion’s display cases stems from their unrivaled combination of strength, security, and cutting-edge technology. These cases boast a distinctive design, featuring a low base crowned by expansive glass enclosures that prioritize transparency. The sliding translation display cases, diagonally divided, open seamlessly above eye level, creating a floating illusion with an anchoring system discreetly integrated between the floating floor and the building’s foundation.
Technological Prowess and Security Assurance
Embedded within the base of these display cases lies advanced technology orchestrating a controlled microclimate, regulating humidity levels, and fortifying the security measures. Even in the face of a compromised lock, specialized equipment is requisite for accessing the case, ensuring an added layer of protection.
User-Friendly Design for Curatorial Excellence
Crafted with the curator in mind, Goppion’s display cases prioritize ease of use and flexibility. The hydraulic pantograph mechanism facilitates the effortless lifting of the entire glass bonnet, allowing curators to enter and rearrange objects with utmost convenience. The horizontal sliding mechanism enables the cases to fully open either orthogonally at the center or diagonally across the top, presenting an array of display possibilities. The interior display deck, equipped with a sliding mechanism, simplifies cleaning and supports various arrangements. Silbonit-coated metal pedestals and panels comprise the interior display fittings, marrying aesthetics with functionality.
A Secure Haven for Islamic Art: Goppion’s Role in Construction
Applied to the interior, Goppion’s display cases embody a harmonious fusion of metal and glass, ensuring both security and aesthetic appeal. The Louvre’s Islamic Art Galleries stand as a testament to the seamless integration of Goppion’s expertise in construction, providing a secure haven for the treasures that grace this cultural gem.
