Embracing Nature: Am Kaiserstrand Bathhouse by Lang+Schwaerzler

Situated on the eastern coast of Lake Constance in western Austria, the “Am Kaiserstrand” bathhouse offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Bregenz, Pfaender Mountain, and the Swiss Alps. Connected to the shore by a 42-meter-long pier, this pile structure stands as a focal point in the recreational zone of the same name. Recently revitalized, the entire complex now boasts extended coastal promenades, new pedestrian and bike paths, and a refurbished historic hotel complex.

Architectural Marvel

The bathhouse, undoubtedly the centerpiece of the complex, seamlessly blends contemporary design with Vorarlberg’s architectural tradition. Following the Swabian Sea typology, the simple, single-story structure sits atop a platform supported by 30 reinforced concrete columns. Housing a glazed restaurant with terrace access to the sundeck, as well as changing rooms, showers, and WCs, the bathhouse epitomizes functionality and elegance.

Flexible Design

A defining feature of the bathhouse is its flexibility. High folding shutters and sliding-glass doors allow for versatile use, enabling the building to be fully opened or closed as needed. This adaptability not only enhances the visitor experience but also ensures protection from inclement weather without compromising the panoramic views.

Sustainable Materials

Wood takes center stage in the bathhouse’s design, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. From the columns and beams to the horizontal cladding of the facade and all interior and exterior floors, renewable silver fir sourced from nearby forests dominates the structure. Left untreated, the silver fir will weather naturally over time, harmonizing with its surroundings.

Environmentally Conscious Energy Concept

In line with its eco-friendly ethos, the bathhouse incorporates an energy-efficient design. Controlled ventilation and heat recovery systems optimize energy usage, while an air-to-air heat pump pre-warms incoming air during the heating season, ensuring a comfortable environment for patrons while minimizing environmental impact.
