Rejuvenating Chang’an: The Transformation of Chang’an Innovation Square

In Dongguan Shi, China, architect Tao Zhu and Zhutao Architecture Design Studio embarked on a visionary project titled “Super Link,” aimed at revitalizing the industrial town of Chang’an. Completed in 2019, the project sought to infuse new life into the urban landscape through innovative spatial, industrial, and systemic interventions.

Strategic Site Transformation

The initiative began with the renovation of stores, houses, and warehouses along the main street, laying the groundwork for the transformation of the entire old factory area into an innovation park. The strategic approach focused on integrating the facades of buildings along North Lianfeng Road to create a continuous urban interface, activating the surrounding area and connecting it with community parks and gyms.

Embracing Three-Dimensional Connectivity

To enhance pedestrian connectivity, the project introduced open corridors and stairs linking three levels at 0m, 6m, and 15m heights, forming a dynamic 3D pedestrian network and urban garden. Two major gateways were established as urban nodes, marking the entries to the Innovation Square and facilitating multi-level spatial flows.

Harmonizing Tradition and Modernity

The design pays homage to Chang’an Town’s cultural heritage by incorporating elements reminiscent of the Tang Dynasty. A steel canopy, resembling a “flying carpet,” adorned with orange terracotta and glazed tiles, celebrates the town’s rich history and identity. Street corridors between buildings strengthen communal connections, while open entrances and gathering parks serve as primary public spaces, fostering community engagement and interaction.

Bridging the Gap between New and Old

An essential aspect of the project was the seamless integration of new construction with existing structures. By systematically grounding round steel columns at canopy ends, staircases, and rooftops, the design effectively merged old and new elements. Façade treatments, including tile wrapping and subtle paving variations, created a dialogue between tradition and modernity, preserving the texture of the old while introducing contemporary design elements.

Injecting New Energy into Urban Life

Through meticulous spatial and tectonic interventions, Chang’an Innovation Square breathes new life into an old factory district, offering residents and visitors a fresh perspective on familiar surroundings. By reimagining public space, infrastructure, and renovation practices, the project exemplifies the potential of innovative design to transform urban environments and inspire vibrant communities.
