Rådhustorget A Historical and Cultural Transformation by Karavan Landskapsarkitekter
Inspired by Vadstena’s Rich Heritage
The design for Rådhustorget, the town hall square in Vadstena, is deeply rooted in the town’s historical and cultural essence. Drawing inspiration from Vadstena’s vibrant cultural life—including its theatre, opera, art, and music—as well as its intriguing medieval history and picturesque location by Lake Vättern, the proposal reimagines the square into two distinct yet interconnected spaces: the entrance area and the main square. Both areas reflect the town’s cultural heritage through contrasting designs, materials, and functions, akin to a theatre setup.
The Entrance: A Welcoming Foyer
The entrance area, or entréplatsen, serves as a welcoming foyer, reminiscent of a theatre lobby where people gather under chandeliers, enjoy snacks, and engage in conversation. This space forms a clear boundary against the adjacent street with a cohesive floor design. The sunniest part of the entrance area features a paved section for outdoor seating, framed by lush perennial plantings and evergreen elements, creating a semi-green square.
The Main Square: A Grand Salon
Transitioning from the entrance to the main square, Rådhustorget is envisioned as a spacious lounge, or salon, representing Vadstena’s “fine room” for both everyday activities and celebrations. A rectangular surface stretches out like a stage floor, with smooth granite slabs laid in a parquet pattern at the foot of the town hall’s stairs, which serve as the stage. The precise shape and angle of this surface emphasize the town hall’s significance as one of the city’s oldest and most important buildings.
Design Elements and Features
Rådhustorget is designed as a traditional paved square, free from trees and plantings, with the “parquet floor” framed by an embroidery border. A uniform floor of smaller natural stones, arranged in squares, surrounds this central area. To enhance the building’s historic character, a cobblestone border runs along the facades of the town hall. The area closest to the building is cleared of adjacent greenery, and all facades are lined with small granite stones. The square offers ample seating options, including long sofas, chairs, and sunbeds, ensuring comfort and versatility.
Thoughtful Lighting Design
The lighting design, developed in collaboration with Black Lighting Design, enhances the different scales of the space and provides a comfortable ambiance year-round. Elegant lanterns and poles with spotlights illuminate the square and surrounding walkways. These lanterns cast a warm glow over the area, while spotlights highlight the facades with soft, warm light, defining the square and creating a striking backdrop for the space, akin to a theatre stage.
Through its thoughtful design, Rådhustorget beautifully integrates Vadstena’s historical and cultural heritage into a functional and inviting public space, fostering a sense of community and celebration.
